5Great coffee maker
By orion
I bought this to replace a cheap one-cup maker I bought from from one of those junk catalog. This one is very nice looking, it works ultra fast with automatic shut off and I can use my own larger mug instead of the cup which comes with it. If you use a huge mug you may need to add more water. I like the cord on the side. If it was on the back, you couldn't put it up against the wall. Makes no mess and works great!

2Great Little Coffee Maker--for a year and a half
By Still Learning
Additional comment, 2009: My original review is below, but here's what happened eventually: The machine started to leak like crazy. It had a lifespan of about 18 months.Original review:I have no interest in pod-coffee (I roast my own beans), so that limited my choices when I decided to take my all-white-plastic Black and Decker one-cupper to the office, and spring for a better-looking pot for home. This stainless and black-plastic machine makes very good coffee indeed, looks terrific and cleans up quickly and beautifully. (I've used the white one for years and it looks dreadful at this point). I congratulate myself on this purchase. As for the amount it makes: a standard mug. I wouldn't want it any bigger. All my mugs fit into it and I prefer two fresh cups to one big stale one.I use unbleached No. 1 coffee filters (or cut down bigger ones if I can't find No.1s) instead of the permanent filter it came with because the paper picks up residual oil, is easy to clean up, and the used grounds all end up in the compost or trash, not down the drain.

3Does what it's supposed to do...
By PM in NY
...which is make one 8 oz cup of coffee. There are ways to work around it tho, if you drink more coffee:1) You can go over the fill line and get about 14 oz of coffee, and I haven't had any bad experiences doing so yet. You have to stay close though, and do a cup switch, or the cup will overflow, since there's not enough space to hold a bigger cup than the one that comes with the coffeemaker.2)Dump the grinds and make another cup.3) The best so far, put extra coffee into the filter. When the first cup is done, pour the coffee into a bigger cup. Turn the machine back on and run more water through the same coffee grinds. When that's finished, put it into the bigger cup with the coffee you made before.4) Cut down on your coffee So, my displeasure with the product is because of my own tastes. But for making one 8 oz cup of coffee, it's of overall good quality. It doesn't take up a lot of space, so great for those with little counterspace. It looks sleek, just like in the picture. Also, it's nice not having a glass pot, which often broke on me. Not having to buy filters is also convenient. Finally, as for having a plastic scoop, you still have to figure out how much coffee is the proper strength for your taste. So, using exactly two scoops won't work for everyone, like the advertisement says. However, that is true for all coffeemakers. So, if you're sure you only want one 8 oz cup of coffee, or don't mind making one cup twice, short on counterspace, hate buying and storing filters and always breaking your glass coffee urn, this is the coffeemaker for you!!

5A Couple of Tips
By zygr
First of all, the reason we bought this is because, in general, percolators make great tasting coffee. They can turn even the worst quality beans into a good cup of coffee. Initially, the Presto lived up to our expectations. And after doing the following, it is once again making great cups of coffee.Tip #1 - Grind your coffee using the appropriate setting. After some usage, we would at times get a mouthful of grinds. We realized it was important to use the percolator setting on the coffee grinder at the supermarket. Since then, an occasional coffee grind finds its way into our cup.Tip #2 - Clean the filter basket with a brush.Despite cleaning the pot before each usage, the coffee was gradually getting weaker each day. We then realized that the holes in the bottom of the filter basket were clogged. We could not unclog them using a sponge so I started poking each one individually with a toothpick before deciding there was no way we would have the time or patience to do it every day. So, we tried a brush with plastic bristles and, within seconds, the basket was completely unclogged. So, we bought a small brush with a long handle and use it to clean the filter basket and the bottom of the pot.

5Sure beats the other brands
By Valdenny
I thought my Hamilton Beach percolator was decent for the price, I even wrote a review about it in December, 2006. One week later, this 1-year old coffee maker was barely keeping the coffee hot. Then I visited my son in Alaska at Christmas and noticed that his 6-yr old Presto percolator was still delivering great, hot coffee in record time. I returned home, ordered my Presto 12-cup percolator and am highly impressed. It's lighter, easier to load, easier to pour, easier to clean, perks ultra-fast and makes a great, hot cup of coffee. Because of its lighter stainless steel pot, it cools down faster if you want to make a second batch of coffee right away. (We make two pots and pour the first batch into a thermos for back-up when company comes) Based on its performance, I'm surprised the price is so reasonable.

5Simplicity
By M. Mcdaniel
I've used every type of coffee maker around. I look for all stainless- that means NO plastic or aluminum contacting the water----this has been a great product for me--I love perked coffee. When I'm not using this I use a Cona glass vacuum maker--- I'm a purist about materials and coffee making. Presto has been the most reliable of all my electric percs. It's all stainless.

3Good, but not for a coffee enthusaist
By Craigery
Let me firs say, I used to work for Starbucks and was a Coffee Master. I am a bit of purist so I grade a machine a bit harder than the average joe. What I love:Cuisinart is one of the few companies that makes a coffee maker that brews at 190 degrees. (This is important because the flavor from your beans doesn't fully extract if the water isn't hot enough. This is usually one of the differences between a cheap coffee maker and a more expensive one. Cheap makers will heat the coffee hot with the hot plate, but it did not "brew" the coffee at the temperature it eventually gets to.)It doesn't leak and the light when you fill a mug is a nice feature. All the parts come out for easy filling, rinsing, etc. YOu won't be able to put this under a cabinet though because the top still has a lid that would be blocked. No leaks if the inside over flows or spills either! Any internal overflow drains into the drip tray which is a very nice feature. The spray head is one of the best I've seen. It fully covers all the coffee grounds. It also brews a whole pot in about 7 minutes without flavor loss. (Machines that brew too fast usually don't get all the flavor out of coffee. Bunn for instance, brews a pot in just 3 minutes and at the right temperature, but the water is forced through too fast and doesn't have enough contact time with the coffee. Coffee is a bit like tea in that it does need to steep a bit, just not nearly as long unless using a French Press, the best method of brewing but the most inconvenient.)It comes with a permanent flat filter, which saves you from buying one or paper ones. However, and this is a picky issue, cone shaped is much better. The coffee and water contant better with cone and make a better cup. Cuisinart generally uses only cone shaped for that reason, but the design of the machine doesn't allow for that unless they'd make it taller, and it's already almost too tall. The design is a nice addition to your kitchen counter, and it looks better in person than it does in the picture. What I don't like:I was led to believe when the redid this model that the chamber inside was thermal and used "soft heat" to keep the coffee hot for up to four hours. (Soft heat isn't hot plate hot, but keeps just enough each to help a thermal unit stay hot far longer without scorching) This is NOT at all the case. The inside is just a plastic tub with a big hot plate in it. So if you are like me and you hate "baked" coffee that's been on the heating element too long, you won't be happy with the taste of the coffee after the first hour or so. (I'm one of those people who despises mircowaving coffee because it breaks the coffee down and turns it into awful, syrupy sludge... this is also why I generally go with thermal carafes.)The Coffee Gage is useless. Because there is no carafe, that gage that looks like a gas gage is really needed. With a carafe, you can either see or feel by weight when it's low. I have exchanged this model twice because it doesn't work, and it's going back a third time (and probably for good.)If you have a household that can tear through a pot of coffee quickly, then this would probably be a great machine for you. With no disrespect to the Folger's drinkers of the world, this machine would probably also be a good fit for you. If you are someone who spends the extra money on better gourmet coffees, this machine will not be your friend. Your first cup or two will be fabulous, but it's will be burnt and gross soon after from the heating plate inside. After this time, you can't tell if you brewed a nice Citusry African, an earthy Indonesian, or cheap Chock Ful O Nuts. It's just burnt sludge.Maybe next time they update this model, they will spend a little extra effort on the coffee tank inside that replaces the carafe. It's plastic, and the heating element will give a plastic taste over time too. You also have to be careful when taking out the tank because it will burn you if you don't use the cheap plastic handle to lift it out.Had they made a thermal tank inside with soft heat, I would be giving this 4 stars (it needs a gage that actually works to get 5.) The old model had a cut out in the front to physically show you the coffee level, and something like that would have been better, especially since the coffee isn't enclosed in a thermal housing.I do recommend Cuisinarts machines with the thermal carafes. They do a great job of holding heat, especially if rinse them with hot water before brewing.Someday, someone will make the ultimate carafe-less machine... but today is not that day.

4Solid Carafeless/on-demand Coffee Maker
By Kathy Martin
Only had Cuisinart's DCC-3000 for 4 days so really need more time for an evaluation. I've owned a few Hamilton Beach Brewstation carafeless models recently and I really like them. The Hamilton Beach units make great coffee but always develop leaking issues sooner or later. If you get to 2 years without a leaking issue you should feel fortunate.First, the DCC-3000 by Cuisinart is an entirely different level of machine. It's very sturdy, well made and my unit purchased does not look like the picture in Amazon's advertisement. It looks better. The power cord is VERY short, maybe 14-16". Unless you use an extension cord you must locate it directly in front of a power outlet or in an area where it is not beneath an overhead kitchen cabinet. If under a cabinet, the cord just barely allows room to pull out from cabinet, lift the lid on top, and remove the coffee tank for cleaning, without unplugging the unit. The coffee dispenser turns on a soft LED light above you coffee cup and smartly allows you to view the rising coffee level in the cup.....very nice feature. After 4 days of making my AM coffee, I'm now using the right amount of coffee and water to suit my tastes (strong). I prefer my coffee very hot and most coffee makers don't quite get hot enough for me. The Ham Beach Brewstations excel at hot coffee. The DCC-3000 falls short, almost gets there but I must nuke/microwave each cup for 30-35 seconds to bring to temp. This machine is quiet, brews relatively quickly, but I think a bit slower than a Brewstation.Bottomline, so far I think this is a great unit, much more substantial, and higher quality than the H/B Brewstation. At current prices, it will cost you $5-20 more than the best Brewmaster (a 47454 Deluxe), but the DCC-3000 has a 3-year warranty rather than 1-year. This unit is classier looking and you'll easily notice the lack of flimsy plastics found in a guaranteed to leak Brewstation. You can use paper filters or the gold-mesh basket that comes with it. Also a charcoal filter with DCC-3000 though I'm unsure if it really makes a difference. With the additional warranty, pricing in the $90's, and higher quality unit I think this is a no-brainer.....buy the Cuisinart DCC-3000.****One-month update*****I still like this unit, however, the number one reason to buy a any coffee maker is to make great coffee. As another reviewer said, the coffee is weak/watery. I tried adding more coffee which does modestly help but obviously drives up the cost of making a pot. I use Starbucks coffee......not cheap. I believe the water flows thru the basket/filter too fast....it isn't held in basket long enough to flavor the brew. I'm going to try 2 things......using 2 paper filters instead of one (or use a paper filter with the gold basket?) to slow down water passing thru basket(and hope it doesn't overflow). If that doesn't work I plan to grind my coffee finer, almost as fine as an expresso grind. Hope I don't end up with mess.

5please ban comments from people who don't read manual
By Keith Robberding
So, my review is to the many people that didn't read the manual and see that if you are only making a few cups of coffeethere is a 1-4 cups select button so the coffee is stronger because with a small amount of water running through it thereis an extra demand on the maker I just made the best cup of coffee I've had in 3 years with my new cuisinart coffee on demand. First I ran 12 cups of waterthrough the machine after soaking my filter for 20 minutes. Set the machine to 1-4 cups and pressed on. I did , because of past experience but an xtra bit of water in the machine to account for coffee filter basket saturation. The result was a really piping hot cup of rich coffee that allowed me to add a bit of non dairy creamer in it and not reducethe temperature. They include a manual so people will read it, please don't comment on a machine that works properly until youdon't use it according to design.

2Broke after 3 months use
By R. Kramer
Needed a small footprint coffee maker so this seemed to fit the bill. Yes, it is small and the fact it came with a reusable filter WAS a plus. It is very cheap...and that is to be expected from a $20 machine built in China. So basically the PROS are: Small and reusable filter. CONS: Coffee doesn't come out HOT. It is nearly hot but I like my coffee hot. The biggest issue is now, after 3 months it shuts off before it is done brewing! I have to hit the little button sometimes 3 times for it to finish. If it didn't break I might give it another star but really, it is a VERY cheaply made unit. The travel mug is not for travel and doesn't insulate well.I'd pass on this one.

3To Clear Some Things Up . . .
By Breanne L Eriksen
I bought this coffee maker at Fred Meyer for half the price (can't remember if it was on sale or just THAT much cheaper). I'm on here looking it up because my husband has taken up drinking coffee after I bought this and was looking to buy a second mug!Any way, the negative reviews, I just wanted to clear up that the coffee maker DOES turn off in what you would think is during the brewing process but that is not true. What it does is kind of sucks up the water and once it has sucked up all of the water into the filter (don't ask me the technical terms for this process, lol) it will turn off and just drip the rest of the coffee out. So basically, it's SUPPOSED to do that. Turn it on, once, let it go, when you hear the gurgling sound it's about to shut off, let it shut off, let the rest of it drip into your cup. Takes about 3-5 minutes after that process for it to be completely done. If you turn it on again you're burning your coffee! And total, it takes less than 10 minutes to get all 16 oz made. The design of it IS cheap, I'll agree with that, however I knocked it off my counter once (it's very light weight so I barely bumped it and off it flew) and it didn't get damaged so I would have to say it's at least durable. The silver face plate has also popped off on me but it just snaps back on. I'm VERY accident prone and rough with electronics and the like, so if it can survive me, it can survive anything, hehehe. But yeah, $45 is definitely too much for this brewer and I'm not sure why I was able to get it so cheap. Look in the stores first!

4I like it and use it.
By Lynn Fleming
I use this everyday. In the morning for work with "one to go" for driving. I use it to make hot water for tea instead of the microwave. I use it to make hot water for instant oatmeal. It does make hot water. Don't believe the reviews about it does not. It is very fast and easy to clean. I figured out to add one extra small spoon of coffee to make it a bit stronger. I add the hazelnut creamer and sweetener packs to the cup. I like it. It's simple and fast. I haven't tried the pods. They defeat the purpose of a good cup of coffee at a lower price. I did notice on Amazon there are make your own pods kits. I might try this for travel.

5A great single serve brewer for a great price
By Benjamin A. Cotten
Purchased mine directly from KitchenAid.I have been on the hunt for a single server brewer that doesn't use those awful Keurig pods. I want to use my own, home roasted coffee and I'm picky about water temperature, spray head design, etc. I'm a coffee professional working in the Specialty Coffee industry. I live a breathe coffee every day. I prefer manual brew methods, but at 7am I want a good cup without the fuss. This brewer has impressed me in that role for sure. This brewer has really fit the bill. The water gets up to the required 200 degrees, the shower head design disperses the water evenly across the bed of coffee, and it brews quickly through a nicely designed brew basket and gold tone filter. The gold tone filter works quite well. I would avoid paper. Aside from the waste, paper filters soak up a lot of the volatile oils in the coffee that provide so much of the flavor - especially in the body of the coffee. The metal filter allows those oils to extract into the coffee giving a more flavorful cup with better body. If you use paper, go with the Filtropa brand. The white ones. The water reservoir is handy. It has a nice handle that lifts up on the top for easy carrying. The carafe/travel mug keep the coffee hot. I use it as a carafe instead of a travel mug. I just know I'll lose it if I take it to the car and I like to keep the coffee hot while I drink a cup waiting for my wife to come get her cup in the morning. It pours very nicely into a regular mug.You can also put your own regular mug under it, but I prefer the carafe/travel mug so that the coffee stays hot inbetween pours. This is just the right portion size. I can make one 12oz cup for myself, or 2 12 oz cups for me and my wife (with a little left over for a partial refill - makes 18oz total at full capacity). This was very well thought out!It is tall, but it will fit under your cabinets (well, most cabinets). You may have to slide it out a bit to remove the water reservoir, but what's the big deal? Every coffee maker I have ever owned required that in order to pour in my water. The drip tray is fantastic. Most brewers don't have them, and that's a shame. KA took a cue from the espresso market and included one on this unit. It's handy and gives it an upscale feel that is appreciated. Some may consider the lack of a timer a negative. Not me. Once you grind your coffee, you start losing noticeable flavor in less than 1 minute. Grinding your coffee and leaving it in the non-air tight brew basket for 8 hours should be a crime! Is it that hard to scoop and grind in the morning?Leaving the timer off is, I'm sure, a big part of why this machine is so affordable. KitchenAid has always been great at including the features you need, and not the ones you don't so that they can build high quality gear at a reasonable price point. And, yeah, the blue light on the front is mesmerizing. What can I say?

1Excellent....errr, maybe not
By Coffee guy
Really great machine! Coffee is HOT, and flavor is outstanding, never bitter and no funny aftertaste, this really lets the flavor come through. Although I like the design of the Hamilton Beach Scoop better, this KA makes a better tasting cup - I had them both side by side for a week and picked the KA, and returned the HB. I think the cone shaped filter and the showerhead design gives this machine what the HB Scoop lacks - evenly soaked grounds and a nice bold flavor from the cone design vs. the flat bottom HB filter. Build quality seems okay, and the design works quite well - no complaints. I use 5 tbsp's for 16oz. and it's just right. I didn't care for the thermal mug that came with it, seemed to introduce a plastic taste. I found a 16oz Mr. Coffee "Traverse" ceramic travel mug that fits this machine perfectly and this combo is equal to, if not better than anything I get when buying coffee out vs. making it at home, and I'm extremely picky about that.Edit - 3 machines later.... I give up. I really like this machine, but unfortunately it has a fatal flaw. Each of the 3 machines I bought ended up having the same issue after about 3 weeks of use - it's clearly a design flaw. The filter basket hinge is weak, and apparently grows weaker with use due to heat. Eventually it begins to droop, creating a visible gap. But, it's not just cosmetic, although it does look weird. When the gap grows large enough, the filter basket housing no longer makes contact with a switch that's located in the center of the shower head housing. This switch must be depressed by the filter basket to make the brewer work, otherwise it won't get the signal that its okay to send water. So, to make it work you have to manually push and hold the filter basket up to make it brew coffee. Too bad, because I like the coffee and the overall design, but it's back to the drawing board for the engineers at KitchenAid.

4The best single cup machine that I've seen so far
By Mark D. Schnittman
My main coffee maker is a Cuisinart. Using high-quality beans, grinding my own, I have perfected the art of making coffee -- to my tastes, at least. I tried a number of other single cup machines, and this one is the closest to my normal weekend pot. It is really just a smaller version of my main machine: cone gold filter, etc. Note that this machine does not have a hotplate, as the coffee is meant to be dispensed into either a travel mug or a regular mug. The temperature of the coffee is hot, without being too much so, and it takes about 3 - 5 minutes to brew a 16oz travel mug when I leave in the morning. I grind the beans and fill the water tank the night before, then just hit the power button as I'm getting ready to leave. The unit seems well made, but be aware that the entire body is metal-colored plastic, and doesn't have the build quality of my full-sized coffee maker (stainless). All in all a good purchase for me. Recommended.

510 **********s!
By Jordy's Mom
I came across this coffeemaker in an Austin Holiday Inn earlier this year. I've never been a coffee drinker but have acquired a taste for Mocha Frappacinos. During my last trip to Austin, I decided to find out what they cost. I found it here for $14+. I checked out the shipping costs & when I found NONE, I pressed the BUY button! Additionally, NO TAX! I'm still shocked! It came quickly, superbly packed & works instantly. Its small enough to store with my glassware. I make a cup of coffee, pour it over a large glass of ice, add some vanilla almond milk & I just saved a few dollars! My daughter wants me to buy one for her hubby for Christmas! So, that's the plan! ONE OF MY BEST AMAZON PURCHASES EVER! Kuddos to seller!
