4Favorable initial results; better than Penguin (updated)
By Aerocraft67
We replaced a second Sodastream Penguin with this unit, which uses the same carafes and gas containers. The build quality and design was disappointing with the Penguin. The Crystal improves on the design considerably, which helps circumvent build quality that appears to be similar to the Penguin. The gas valve is operated with a button instead of a lever, which makes the Crystal less cumbersome to operate, and also makes a better fit between the counter and cupboards. The excess gas release is integrated into the removal of the carafe rather than requiring a second button push. Loading and unloading carafes is also more elegant than with the Penguin. Like the Penguin, the back cover and latch that contains the canister feels chincy. The toot noises that indicate gas pressure are funkier and less shrill than the Penguin. All that for 10% lower price. Just finishing the first gas canister so we'll see how it holds up. Although it's a terribly subjective judgment since we didn't keep any records, this canister seems to be lasting longer than previous ones with the Penguin. That said, we love the sparkling water and drink up quite a bit of it. Delicious yet simple with fresh lemon or lime. Just plain is fine, too; so much better than still. We've never bothered with any syrups.Update: 15 months on, the soda maker still works. The twisting tab to lock and unlock the unit for charging can be a little stubborn, but thus far has not failed. It's as essential to us as the coffee maker, even though we just use it primarily for plain sparkling tap water. For two adults and a toddler, we keep five carafes in rotation, which helps ensure we always have some cold ones on hand, even if we let a few empties stack up before refilling. Although five carafes is a lot to manage, the container size is probably ideal at two servings each. The gas disperses rapidly once the cap is opened, so larger containers would just go flat after the first serving and waste the gas, even at the rapid rate we consume the water. We also have five charger bottles, so we rarely run out of gas before remembering to grab a few of the empties when we go to the mall, where there are two stores that will exchange them, as well as other options around town. It's a small hassle to haul more than a couple of chargers to the store and back, but beats schlepping the equivalent amount of bottled water for sure. And it encourages us to drink a lot of water. Definitely a good value, despite the bizarre campaign to discredit the product lines by an Amazon reviewer with dubious motives.

5Fast and easy sparkling water in glass
By DSM
I was torn as to which SodaStream model I should get. I actually tried another model first but the plastic bottles really bothered me. I know they are BPA free but I still don't like the idea of plastic coming into contact with my food. There are a lot of other chemicals in plastic that concern me, aside from BPA.I was a bit put off by the much higher price for the Crystal vs the cheaper models that come with a plastic bottle. I had trouble justifying paying twice as much just to get a glass bottle. But I knew I would never be comfortable with the plastic so I returned the Fizz I had previously bought and got myself a Crystal SodaStream.I still feel that this unit is overpriced and preying on those who strongly dislike plastic, but there is nothing wrong with the product itself, so I am giving it 5 stars. I also can see where some of the added cost comes. This model doesn't just have a glass bottle, but the machine completely encases the bottle while it is being carbonated. I imagine this is because exploding glass is much more dangerous than exploding plastic and the fact that it is encased will prevent injury. The Crystal SodaStream is solid and feels well-built. I have used it almost every evening for 3 months to make 2 glasses of sparkling water and I still have CO2 left. I love that I don't have to haul bottles of sparkling water to my house and also that those bottles aren't going to a landfill somewhere. All in all, I am very happy with this purchase. I just wish it was cheaper.

4It is not all about cost..
By DaveC19
Allot of reviews go on about whether the Sodastream is cost effective or not.To me it was about the variety of flavors you can get and being able to control the amount if fizz to YOUR taste. When you buy Coke you get Coke, how they make it and that is that. With this you can put in less syrup if you like your drink less sweet or more if you like more. You can put in more fizz if you want a more fizzy drink. The Sodastream flavors are good, if you get the right ones. Avoid the flavors with Splenda and go for the "naturals". The fruit flavors are good like the grapefruit one and actually have a decent amout of real juice in them. The Cola natural one is sweetened with cane sugar and not that awful HFCS that the brand names use.To me it is more about choice and being able to tailor my soda to my tastes. The nice thing about this version of Sodastream is that it uses smaller bottles. This means 2 can finish a bottle in one sitting and the soda then doesn't go flat like it does if you drink half, then store the rest (the more air left in the bottle when you store, the flatter it will be next time). It also has the advantage that you can make the flavor stronger because one cap of syrup makes a stronger drink in less water.
